Composers Concordance presents the concert 'Legends,' including the 1st annual Legends Award. Accepting on behalf of hip hop originator Afrika Bambaataa (who will be away performing in Dubai,) will be members of his Zulu Nation. Afrika Bambaataa of Soulsonic Force and Zulu Nation pioneered contemporary hip hop music, and in pieces such as 'Planet Rock' and 'Searching for the Perfect Beat,' established extended musical forms in the style. The award directly acknowledges a great influence on contemporary musical composition.

The concert, to be held at West Park Presbyterian Church on Manhattan's Upper West Side, features Thomas Carlo Bo conducting the CompCord String Orchestra, as well as poet Tongo Eisen-Martin, oboist Keve Wilson, and Publiquartet, performing music by Dan Cooper, Otto Luening, Milica Paranosic, Gene Pritsker, Dave Soldier, and Randy Woolf. The Zulu Nation's influence will be heard in Soldier's 'Bambaataa Variations' for quartet and string orchestra.

The orchestra features violinists Lynn Bechtold, Chern Hwei Fung, Mario Gotoh, Amy Kimball, Julianne Klopotic, Denise Stillwell, and Mioi Takeda; violists Armand Alpyspaev, Whitney LaGrange, and Orlando Wells; cellists Tish Edens and Michael Midarsky; and bassist Mat Fieldes. The concert will be followed by a brief reception.
