CC: What is 'Poison' and how/why have you started it?

VV: Poison is an experimental design label that came to life in early 2012. I conceive

and create each piece by hand and sell online (www.etsy.com/shop/poisonnyc).

I also create custom commissioned pieces.

In Fall of 2011 I began working and hanging around the East Village and the amazing

music scene that had been sprouting around it. Being surrounded by so many musicians,

I decided to begin experimenting with guitar strap making, thus Poison was born!

The overall concept was to create unique guitar straps and accessories for rock and roll

musicians to wear on stage as statement pieces. I began making custom commissioned

pieces for my friends and through my web store.

The musicians of NYC are a deep source of inspiration and continue to be who I keep in mind while designing. The functional elements of the pieces are just as important to me as the

fashion elements are, so maintaining that balance is always a goal.

The aesthetic of Poison is mainly influenced by music and fashion history. I draw inspiration from glam rock, punk rock, horror, kitsch, steam punk, art, and fashions from the Victorian Age through the 1980s.

I also make handbags, small leather goods, baby clothing and accessories, and occasionally apparel. I really make whatever I feel inspired to create at the moment without limiting myself to the specifics of a collection. It's more about the individual piece and it's role as the focal point of a look.

The name Poison is because I was really inspired by old apothecary labels and bottles at the time of the brand's conception. I just wanted a graphic logo that looked cool and somehow portrayed the design aesthetic of the label.

CC: How did you get acquainted with Composers Concordance?

VV: I took an American Music history class at FIT with Dan Cooper as instructor. I loved the class and Dan and I stayed in touch. I became acquainted with CC when he invited me to contribute a fashion element to this seasons' events!

CC: How do you see the collaborative relationship between Poison and CC developing in the future?

VV: I'm thrilled to be working with such a talented and supportive group of artists! This collaboration is so natural, given that music is one of my main influences to create and is obviously the driving force of CC. Music and fashion really go hand in hand, so there are endless ways of marrying the two that I'm sure we will incorporate into future events. As we all continue working together I see our collaborative efforts becoming more cohesive, while also inspiring each other to grow within our individual styles.
